Local Area Network (LAN) Architecture & Protocols

RFC 1918 private addressing, Ethernet switching, NAT translation, and name services.

Private IP Addressing (RFC 1918)

Local devices operate on non-routable private addresses defined by RFC 1918: 10.0.0.0/8 (16.7M hosts), 172.16.0.0/12 (1M hosts), and 192.168.0.0/16 (65K hosts).

Default Gateway & NAT

The subnet mask determines if destination traffic is local or routed to the Gateway. NAT translates private LAN sockets into public outbound IP packets.

Local DNS vs WINS / NetBIOS

DNS resolves hierarchical domains while WINS maintains backward compatibility for NetBIOS flat names (15 characters) alongside mDNS (Bonjour/Avahi).

DHCP & ARP Protocols

DHCP leases IP parameters upon link establishment, while ARP translates Layer 3 IP destinations into Layer 2 hardware MAC addresses.

LAN & Local Network Troubleshooting

Step-by-step technical fixes for IP conflicts, gateway drops, and DHCP errors.

Issue 1

IP Address Conflict (Duplicate IP on LAN)

⚡ Quick Fix:Toggle Wi-Fi off and on or reconnect Ethernet to request a fresh DHCP lease.
🔧 Technical Fix:Execute `ipconfig /release` followed by `ipconfig /renew`. If using static IP, set an address outside the active DHCP pool.
Issue 2

Default Gateway Unreachable or High Latency (>50ms)

⚡ Quick Fix:Power cycle your router for 20 seconds and move closer to the wireless access point.
🔧 Technical Fix:Clear the ARP cache with `arp -d *` and switch your router channel to an uncongested 5 GHz / 6 GHz frequency.
Issue 3

Self-Assigned 169.254.x.x (APIPA DHCP Failure)

⚡ Quick Fix:Verify your Ethernet cable is plugged into a LAN switch port rather than the WAN/Internet port.
🔧 Technical Fix:Assign a manual static IP (e.g. 192.168.1.150 / 255.255.255.0 / Gateway 192.168.1.1) and restart the Windows DHCP Client service.
Issue 4

DNS Resolution Failure: Webpages Fail but Ping 8.8.8.8 Works

⚡ Quick Fix:Configure your network adapter to use Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google DNS (8.8.8.8) instead of default ISP DNS.
🔧 Technical Fix:Flush corrupted resolver cache with `ipconfig /flushdns` and reset the TCP/IP stack with `netsh int ip reset`.

Did You Know? Networking & Protocol Facts

Historical trivia about 192.168.1.1, APIPA ranges, and the mechanism that saved the Web.

🏠

Why Do Most Routers Default to 192.168.1.1?

In 1996 with RFC 1918, Linksys defaulted their iconic WRT54G routers to 192.168.1.1. As it became the world's best-selling router, the entire consumer networking industry followed suit.

🛡️

NAT: The Hack That Saved the Entire Internet

The 4.29 billion IPv4 address space would have been completely exhausted by 1995. NAT allowed entire buildings and thousands of devices to share a single public IP, keeping the web alive.

👻

The APIPA Ghost Network 169.254.0.0/16

A 169.254.x.x address indicates no DHCP server responded. Windows and macOS self-assign an APIPA address so two directly cabled computers can still communicate.

💾

NetBIOS & The 15-Character Computer Name Limit

Windows computer names are limited to 15 characters because IBM's 1984 NetBIOS protocol reserved the 16th byte to identify service types (<00> Workstation, <20> Server).

Local Area Networks & WebRTC Glossary

Learn the fundamental concepts, protocols, and technical terminology of this tool.

IP Privada / LANLAN

What is a private LAN IP address?

An unroutable internal address reserved under RFC 1918 (e.g., 192.168.1.X or 10.0.0.X) identifying devices within home or corporate intranet boundaries.

Puerta de Enlace (Gateway)Enrutamiento

What is a default network gateway?

The primary internal router interface (typically 192.168.1.1) responsible for bridging local client subnet traffic out to external WAN routes via NAT.

Candidatos ICE / WebRTCWebRTC

How do web browsers discover local IPs without plugins?

Using WebRTC Interactive Connectivity Establishment (ICE), browser rendering engines bind local interfaces to negotiate direct peer-to-peer media streams.

Protocolo DHCPProtocolo

What does DHCP do on your router?

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol automatically leases transient IP addresses, subnets, and DNS configurations to newly connected wireless and wired nodes.
